Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.
Ritonavir is the non-proprietary name for a medication used, usually along with others, to treat HIV/AIDS in infected individuals. Patients also sometimes buy ritonavir to treat Hepatitis C, where it is also used along with other medications, usually ombitasvir and paritaprevir.
Patients typically buy ritonavir by the brand name Norvir for both HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C, though generic alternatives are available in some places.
How Ritonavir Works
Released in the mid-90s, Ritonavir was the second major protease inhibitor available on the market. Since then it has been largely replaced as the primary medication with other protease inhibitors that are more effective and safer; however, at lower-than-standard doses ritonavir is still widely used to supplement those other medications.
Ritonavir and similar medications work by interfering with the virus' ability to replicate itself, prolonging life and improving quality of life. Aside from this, ritonavir has pharmacokinetics enhancer properties, in that it increases absorption of other medications and inhibits them from being metabolized. This function improves the effectiveness of the other medications, making them more effective at lower doses. This is not a small feat; ritonavir is widely used as a pharmacokinetics enhancer.
Patients who use ritonavir and/or similar HIV/AIDS products experience longer life and improved quality of life. Individuals who die from AIDS has dropped by about 60 percent since the introduction of these medications in the mid-90s. Patients who buy ritonavir should be aware, however, that it will not cure HIV/AIDS and, though it makes it somewhat less likely to spread the infection, it does not eliminate the risk entirely.
How Ritonavir is Used
This product is suitable for anyone with HIV/AIDS, especially when other medications---protease inhibitors and integrase inhibitors---are also used. Parents can even buy ritonavir for use in infants aged 1 month old and up, though of course modified dosing is required in children.
The medication is available in four formulations:
All formulas except the oral solution are metered in 100 mg doses. Partial doses are not recommended. Each dose should be taken with food. If a dose is missed, it should be skipped entirely; treatment can resume when it's time for the next dose.
Standard dosage in adults is as follows:
As mentioned above, however, this medication is rarely used at full dosage anymore. Much more commonly patients buy ritonavir at lower doses, using it as a pharmacokinetics enhancer for other drugs. Dosing in this application will depend on the other medications and their strengths, along with other personal variables such as age. A doctor should be consulted for the ideal dosage.
Warnings & Side Effects
Another reason the full dose of ritonavir is not used much anymore is that side effects appear to be dose-dependent. The higher the dose, the more likely side effects will occur and the more severe they'll be.
The most commonly experienced side effects are:
Less commonly more serious side effects occur, which call for emergency medical attention. Patients should be alert for:
The medication can alter the way the immune system works, making patients more prone to infections, even months after starting treatment. Be alert for symptoms, including fever, sweating, mouth or genital sores, diarrhea, and so forth.
Ritonavir can also cause issues with the pancreas and liver. Symptoms include severe stomach pain that radiates to the back, excessive itching, dark urine, and jaundice.
This product can interact with a range of other medications, including over-the-counter supplements, antacids, and so forth. Always check with a doctor before taking other medications during treatment with ritonavir.
